چکیده

We present observations taken with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) of three evolved C-rich stars, the post-AGB star HR 4049 and two planetary nebulae, IRAS21282+5050 and NGC 7027. The spectra are dominated by the well-known infrared emission bands, attributed to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). The SWS spectra for the first time allow a complete overview of the richness of the PAH spectrum with high spectral resolution and high S/N. We present an inventory of the spectral features in the 2.4–17 m wavelength window.

HACA's Heritage: A Free-Radical Pathway to Phenanthrene in Circumstellar Envelopes of Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars.

The hydrogen-abstraction/acetylene-addition (HACA) mechanism has been central for the last decades in attempting to rationalize the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as detected in carbonaceous meteorites such as in Murchison. Nevertheless, the basic reaction mechanisms leading to the formation of even the simplest tricyclic PAHs like anthracene and phenanthrene are still elu...

A SEARCH FOR ortho - BENZYNE ( o - C 6 H 4 ) IN CRL 618 Susanna

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been proposed as potential carriers of the unidentified infrared bands (UIRs) and the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). PAHs are not likely to form by gas-phase or solid-state interstellar chemistry, but rather might be produced in the outflows of carbon-rich evolved stars. PAHs could form from acetylene addition to the phenyl radical (C6H5), which ...

The shape and strength of circumstellar PAH emission bands

We discuss the shape and strength of the emission bands observed in Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) spectra of three carbon-rich evolved stars (Beintema et al. 1996a). The emission bands, due to stretching and bending modes of CC and C-H bonds in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), show large difference in strength and shape, depending on the excitation temperature and size distributio...

Letter to the Editor Dust in R71: first detection of crystalline silicates in the LMC

We present infrared spectroscopy taken with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) of the Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) R71 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The spectrum shows clear evidence for the presence of crystalline olivine at 23.5 μm. This is the first detection of circumstellar crystalline silicates outside our galaxy. In addition, we identify emission at 6.2, 7.7 and possibly 8.6 μm ...
